Location information for Madeira

Known as the 'floating garden' by locals because of its rich volcanic soil providing a botanical wonderland, Madeira is a truly stunning island that was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese explorers. The mountainous terrain offers fantastic natural scenery which is best explored by cheap Madeira car hire.

The island of Madeira is only small, being 35 miles long and 13 miles wide, but it has several cities and villages as well as substantial vineyards, fruit orchids and herb farms. The capital city, Funchal, is located on the south coast of the island. The city has a wide array of activities and cultural attractions to visit by car rental.

There are an abundance of historic churches and cathedrals in downtown Funchal including Capela do Corpo Santo, Santa Maria Maior Mother Church and Capela de Sao Vicente. After checking out the city's history you can sit down and relax at one of the countless restaurants, cafés and bars.

Well known for its wine, Madeira has some fantastic vineyards which are terraced along the mountainside. The two main wine making centres are Cabo Girao and Estreito de Camara dos Lobos. Both have wine tasting tours available, which also include guided walks of the vineyards.

With a hire car in Madeira you can explore many parts of the stunning island such as Sao Vicente, which is home to the Volcanism Centre and breathtaking volcanic caves. Also worth checking out is the mountain village of Pico do Arieiro, which offers panoramic views over the capital city.
